Ridden Demonstrations

I don’t want a brain dead horse, but I do want a safe horse. It is possible to have a horse that is full of character and be safe. You could never accuse my horses of being brain dead but you could accuse them of being safe.

Bring the fun back into riding, ground work is great and plays a huge part in my training, but that is so I can ride my horse and enjoy the experience.

Ground work is NOT a substitute for riding

Whether you want to hack out or compete, safety is a major factor; safety comes through discipline, teaching your horse that when you need his attention he gives it to you.

There is nothing more frustrating than being worried about hacking your horse out or riding in an arena because there is something else going on out side.

In these demonstrations I am hoping to cover:-

Lateral work, in-hand and ridden

Why is lateral work important if you don’t want to compete?
To be able to do anything safely with your horse you need to be-able to move him sideways, whether it is to distract him from a bin bag on the floor, open and close a gate or to lead safely when there is exciting stuff going on around you.

Control of the quarters and control of the shoulders

Almost all evasions whether ridden or in-hand come about through the shoulder or the quarters from niggling schooling issues to major problems such as rearing. I will show you exercises that will give you control of both of these areas so that when you need them to counteract a situation you will have them in place

De-spook and desensitise on the ground and whilst being ridden.

It amazes me how many people don’t hack out because they are worried about their horse spooking at everything on a hack.
It mazes me that people have horses that get upset if everything around them isn’t quiet and still.

This is not the real world, I will show you exercises that will help horses and their owners cope with things that happen that you can’t control, such as a bird flying up or a bag blowing across their path.

Importance of being happy to stand still

There is nothing more frustrating than a horse that won’t happily stand either in hand or ridden, a horse needs to learn that there is comfort in standing in his own space, it makes them more settled in everything they do.

Having a horse to learn to stand still helps in many areas, mounting, standing at a junction, show-grounds, when you have to halt in a dressage test…………the list is endless, yet it is a discipline that is often neglected.

All of the exercises that I will go through in the demonstrations can be used with some adjustment on any horse at any age.

In the demos I will be bring two horses of my own, either Jo, a Dutch warm blood, Vogue another warm blood, but very opinionated or Trigo a lussitano stallion that was so hot that it was like sitting on a time bomb.

I will also be working with a local horse to show you how quick they pick this up and I would also like to do some de-spook training for those that have problems with spooky horses out hacking or in the school.

If you have a horse that you would like to volunteer then please email all the details to equestservices@btinternet.com
